In the last decade, the battle for supremacy in the smartphone
and tablet market has seen Google’s open source Android system leapfrog Apple’s
IOS terms of market share. Analysts estimate Android is installed in over 85
percent of all smartphones and tablets in the world today.
Android’s open ecosystem offers users the opportunity to
customize their devices to a greater degree than IOS. You can save everything to SD card in, download apps
from third party vendors and even gain access to root. Android has a better
filesystem, better sharing capabilities. Apps are available to users of the
platform at a far lower cost than what obtains in IOS. Android’s open use
policy also allows phone makers to tailor the OS to their device’s
specification thus making devices available to all income brackets. From 3”
screens to 24” inch screens, 2mp camera’s to 40mp cameras, there is always
something for everyone. Android also allows a greater integration with the
whole range of google products, a fact that is not lost on loyal google users.
On the other hand, IOS is the leader in the premium devices
category. IOS devices have a fluid user interface, very clean and sharp
graphics and several advanced capabilities such as voice control (Siri), an
unrivalled music and multimedia experience owing to its integration with
Itunes. IOS devices have simplicity, speed in operation, awesome security and a
high degree of polish unmatched by Android.
Despite all these advantages which Android has over IOS, as a
previous iPhone user and current Android user, I'll say that IOS is more fluid,
with better designed and secure apps, and general consistency all over the UI. However, if you
like customizing your phone, tweaking its features, and love Google's services,
then go for Android.
